Main Note:
  • East Punjab (1947 - 1966) was divided into Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Whereas West Punjab became a part of Pakistan after independence and was later renamed as "Punjab Province".
  • The name of the United Provinces was changed to Uttar Pradesh with effect from January 26, 1950.
  • Hyderabad was merged with Andhra Pradesh on 1 November 1956 and was called the state of Andhra Pradesh. On 2 June 2014, it was again bifurcated to form Telangana (Hyderabad) and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Travancore was changed to Kerala on 1 November 1956.
  • Madhya Bharat was renamed as Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 1959.
  • The name of Madras State was changed to Chennai on 14 January 1969.
  • Mysore to Mysore 1 November 1973.
  • Lakshadweep, Minicoy and Amindivi islands were renamed as Lakshadweep on 1 November 1973.
  • Assam was renamed as Assam from 2006.
  • Uttarakhand from Uttaranchal with effect from 1 January 2007.
  • Orissa to Odisha with effect from 1st November 2011.
