What is NEET Exam. - Explanation of Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Seat

The National Eligibility and Entrance Test or NEET is one such exam that will be considered for filling up about 54,000 medical seats across the country. As per the Supreme Court order in 2016, NEET will be the only exam to fill all India quota seats as well as state level quota seats across the country. The exam is also valid for filling private college seats across the country.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2018 on 6th May 2018 (Sunday) under Graduate Examination- NEET 2018 UG Exam. Admit cards have already been issued.

Understanding All India Quota Seats

It is important for the students/candidates to understand the All India Seat Quota. Understanding quota will help them in filling the NEET 2018 application form.
  • There are three different types of seats available in all the medical colleges across the country. There is an all India quota of 15 percent in government medical colleges in the country.
  • Students from any part of the country can apply for 15% seats. For example, suppose a government medical college in state A has a total of 100 seats. Out of these 100,
  • 15 seats will be reserved for All India Quota. These seats are then divided into reserved and general category.
  • Of these, 15 percent seats are reserved for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes or the Scheduled Castes.
  • 7.5% for ST or ST candidates and others
  • 27% for OBC (Non Creamy Layer) candidates.

NEET Exam pattern

The exam consists of subjects from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Candidates appearing for NEET must prepare well to score good marks

Understanding All India Quota Seats
  • It is important for the students/candidates to understand the All India Seat Quota. It will help in understanding the quota when they fill the NEET 2017 application form.
Seat Reservation for NEET:

Category

Percentage of seats reserved

General

47.5%

OBC-NC

27%

SC

15%

ST

7.5%

Physically handicapped

3%

In addition, there is another horizontal reservation for persons with a disability of 3 per cent. If candidates are not available for the same then seats are allotted to that category of persons. For example, there are two students who both belong to OBC category and are contesting for the fourth seat, but one student is also physically handicapped. Then that candidate will get 4th seat preference before other OBC candidate.

Point to remember

Students will be asked to provide their preference while filling the form. They can opt for all India quota seats as well as state level seats. The selection, however, will be based on the merit list prepared by CBSE. CBSE will release two merit lists - one for All India rank and the other for state level rank. Accordingly, students will be called for counselling. Hence, students must be very clear while filling the form for NEET 2017. Understanding how seats will be allotted can help you decide which colleges to opt for.

Best of luck!!!
